ISO 50001 - Energy Management Systems

AWMS offering new registration service.

On August 21, 2012 the ANSI-‐ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) granted AWMS accreditation to offer certification services to ISO 50001. Continuing AWMS’ trend in the fields of ISO 14001 environmental management systems, OHSAS 18001 occupational health and safety management systems, and ISO 14065 greenhouse gas verification services, AWMS was among the first to achieve this accreditation. Currently only three companies have been able to pass the rigorous application and testing process.

What is ISO 50001?
ISO 50001: 2011 is an International Standard built in the same model as ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 with the subject of energy management. AWMS clients holding certificates to ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, or both, will readily recognize the Plan-‐Do-‐Check-‐Act nature of ISO 50001. In the place of assessing environmental aspects or health and safety risks is the assessment of energy use and consumption.

How can this help existing AWMS clients?
By having a registered EMS, OHSMS, or both, an organization is positioned to adapt their existing management system to include this new Standard. Many organizations have placed a high level of focus on sustainability initiatives, and ISO 50001 is a direct response to that demand. By formally including energy management in the scope of registered management systems organizations can better document and manage the resulting savings and improvements. In addition, as clients add new registrations to their scope AWMS is able to add an economy of scale and discount the amount of on-‐site audit time required.

AWMS maintains a focus on providing services that add value to our clients. Achieving accreditation to offer ISO 50001 registration services is the next step in this process. During our ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, and GHG verifications we have noted the amount of attention dedicated to sustainability. The ISO 50001 Standard was developed to provide the same level of confidence in sustainability programs as exists for environmental and health and safety programs.
